What is an 'Approved Child Restraint'?

New child restraining devices must comply with Australian Standard (AS) 1754. Restraints approved to an earlier Australian Standard, E46, may also be used but the RAA recommends that they not be used because they are very old and may have deteriorated to the point they are no longer safe.

Approved restraints are easily recognised by the following certification marks:

Restraints come in five main types, the details of which are intended only as a guide.

Restraint type and maximum approved weight range:

  • Infant Restraint - birth to 9kg

  • Safety Seat - 8 to 18kg

  • Convertible Seat - birth to 18kg

  • Booster Cushion/Seat - 14 to 26kg

  • Harness with booster - 14 to 26kg

  • Harness without booster - 14 to 32kg
