International Driving Permits (IDP)
IDPs are a special license for tourists, authorised by a Unitied Nations Treaty for the purpose of allowing motorists to drive internationally without further tests or applications.
An IDP is proof that you hold a valid drivers license in your home country and is a requirement for renting a motor vehicle in many countries.
It is also helpful for tourists who find themselves in need of identification or assistance as your IDP carries your identification details in nine languages (English, Spanish, Russian, Chinese, Italian, German, Arabic, Swedish and French), in case you need to communicate with foreign authorities.
In SA the only organisation authorised to issue an IDP is RAA.
To obtain an IDP, all you need to do is take a copy of your current Australian drivers license into any RAA Shop along with a passport size photo and fill out an application form.
An IDP:
· Is only valid for 12 months
· Is not a stand-alone document
· Is a translation of your driver's license and
· Must be accompanied by a valid National Driving License at all times
Cost - $30.00
