Episode 2
Level 1 - Passenger Safety
Notes for Parents and Teachers:
Every year many children are fatally injured or hospitalised as a result of injuries sustained in car crashes. In many instances these injuries could have been prevented by the correct purchase, installation and use of properly adjusted, correctly fastened and appropriate child car restraint.
It is the law that everyone must wear a seatbelt and it is the driver’s responsibility to make sure everyone is wearing a seatbelt. The safest place for children to be sitting when in the car is in the back seat. Children under 12 should not sit in the front passenger seat with an airbag.
Many people may not be aware that children should be in a child restraint until they reach 145cm or above in height, as the adult seatbelt will not fit them properly.

Level 4 - Distractions
Notes for Parents and Teachers:
Children will gain an understanding of how distractions can really affect a driver’s ability to concentrate on the road. In particular, they will come to know their role as children in the car and that they have the ability to make a big difference to safety on the road.
Research from Monash University tell us that a driver turning towards children whilst in the car is the number one distraction, being twelve times more distracting than a mobile phone behind the wheel. It is important that children learn to also help younger siblings to make safer choices in the car and that their actions can affect others.
Years 6 & 7 content description - Being healthy, safe and active. Investigate and select strategies to promote health, safety and wellbeing. (ACPPS073)
