COVID-19 benefits

COVID-19 has changed the way we holiday, but with RAA Travel Insurance, you can spread your wings with confidence.

What are the benefits?

If you purchase Premium International Cover or Domestic Cover, the following COVID-19 benefits will automatically be included from 17 November 2021:

  • COVID-19 Cancellation Fees and Lost Deposits.
  • COVID-19 Additional Expenses.
  • COVID-19 Travel Delay.

Overseas medical benefits

If you purchase Premium International Cover, the following COVID-19 benefit will also automatically be included from 17 November 2021:

  • COVID-19 Overseas Medical and Hospital and Emergency Expenses.

If you purchase Premium International Cover, you will be eligible for COVID-19 Overseas Medical and Hospital and Emergency Expenses (Refer to section 21, page 20 of the PDS for full details) if:

  • You’re diagnosed with COVID-19 which first shows itself during the Period of Insurance on Your Certificate of Insurance.
  • You’re quarantined due to close contact of a COVID-19 case.
  • Your Travelling Companion is diagnosed with COVID-19 during your trip and your trip is disrupted.

Cancellation fees, lost deposits and additional expenses

If you purchase Premium International Cover or Domestic Cover, you will be eligible for the following benefits, to a combined maximum of $3,500 per insured adult, if:

COVID-19 Cancellation Fees and Lost Deposits (Refer to section 22, page 20-21 of the PDS for full details)

  • Your trip is cancelled or cut short due to you being diagnosed with COVID-19 and you are unable to commence travel or continue your trip.
  • You are a permanent employee of the healthcare industry and your employer cancels your leave due to COVID-19 prior to your trip resulting in cancellation fees and lost deposits on prepaid tickets and bookings you cannot claim from anyone else.

COVID-19 Additional Expenses (Refer to section 23, page 21 of the PDS for full details)

  • The pre-paid accommodation you planned to stay at is closed for cleaning due to an outbreak of COVID-19.
  • You are denied boarding on your scheduled pre-paid public transport due to you being suspected of being infected with COVID-19.
  • You are travelling to attend a prearranged special event (for example a wedding, conference, music festival or sporting event) which cannot be delayed due to your late arrival and your trip is delayed because of COVID-19 related delays outside of your control, for the reasonable additional cost of using alternative public transport to arrive at your destination on time.

COVID-19 Travel Delay (Refer to section 24, page 22 of the PDS for full details)

  • Your scheduled transport is delayed for at least 6 hours for COVID-19 related delays and you cannot claim the expenses from anyone else, you are covered for additional accommodation, meal and traveling expenses, up to the daily limit, for each day the delay continues.

Domestic plan:

Domestic plan travel insurance offers that extra peace of mind when taking a trip within Australia. Whether you’re travelling as a family, couple or on your own adventure, we’ve got the right policy to cover your needs.

What are the benefits of RAA’s Domestic plan travel insurance?

Unlimited cover for cancellation fees

Holidaying in Australia can also be a big expense. Don’t be out of pocket for something that is outside of your control. Unlimited cover is where the cancellation or amendment expenses incurred are in reference to severe circumstances beyond Your control that You did not expect or intend. RAA’s Domestic plan can cover the cost if you need to replan, reschedule or rebook your holiday. Refer to section 1 page (44-47) of the PDS for full details. 

Lost deposits resulting from illness or accident

Should an unexpected illness prevent You or Your family from travelling or You have a family emergency that prevents You or Your family from taking your trip? Rest assured RAA’s Domestic plan covers out of pocket expenses as a result of having to cancel or postpone your trip. Lost deposits resulting from illness or accident are in reference to severe circumstances beyond Your control that You did not expect or intend. Refer to section 1 page (44-47)) of the PDS for full details.

Travel delay

Sometimes holidays don’t go to plan. Sometimes there is nothing you can do about it. Weather restrictions, flight delays, missed connections to name a few, are some of the events that can impact your out of pocket expense. If your scheduled transport is delayed for at least 6 hours for reasons outside Your control Your Domestic plan will cover the cost of any extra nights accommodation, travel expenses or meal expenses as a result of delay, up to the daily limits. Refer to section 13 page (66-67) of the PDS for full details.

Domestic car hire excess in case of damage, accident or theft (up to $5000).

Imagine getting stung with a hefty excess from your rental car provider half-way into your holiday. What a damper that would be. With RAA’s  Domestic plan or Rental Car Excess plan’, if you have a ding, damage the car with a rented surfboard, or return from a day of sightseeing to find the car missing – the amount of the rental car excess component will be covered . Refer to section 8 page (61-62) of the PDS for full details.

Luggage and personal items

Luggage can still get lost or stolen travelling domestically. Whether you’re waiting at the carousel and your bag doesn’t show, or you experience the unfortunate event of having your bag stolen, RAA’s Domestic plan will cover personal items up to the amount of $7,500 per adult on the policy. Refer to section 3 page (51-55) of the PDS for full details.

Domestic Cancellation Only plan:

The Domestic Cancellation Only plan covers cancellation up to $1000 for travel and accommodation arrangements, that you cannot recover in any other way, if your trip is cancelled or cut short at any time, through severe circumstances beyond your control.

Rental Car Excess plan:

The Rental Car Excess plan covers your rental car insurance excess for an elected value (up to $8,000) if Your rental car is involved in an accident or stolen.

International travel insurance

If you’re travelling overseas, RAA has a range of policies to suit your budget or needs. Choose from Premium, Essentials or Basic.

Our Premium policy includes $unlimited cover for cancellation fees and lost deposits resulting from illness or accident of travellers listed on the policy, $unlimited overseas medical and hospital costs, and $unlimited emergency expenses if your trip is disrupted (limitations are listed in our Product Disclosure Statement (PDF, 815KB) and Supplementary PDS - applied 5 October 2021 to 17 November 2021 (PDF, 844KB).

Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance

This is a great money-saving option for regular travellers, with cover for an unlimited number of trips over a 12-month period. Your destinations must be at least 250km away from your home and you can choose from a maximum trip length of 30, 45 or 60 days.
