Recommended Child Restraints

4 Years to 7 Years

Child Safety Seat or Booster Seat with Seatbelt

Children between the age of 4 years and 7 years of age must use EITHER an approved child safety seat with inbuilt harness OR an approved booster seat with a seatbelt or child safety harness.

Children in this age bracket must only be in the front of the vehicle if all the rear seating positions are taken by children under 7 years. In vehicles with airbags, always follow the vehicle manufacturer's instructions. Most vehicle manufacturers will warn against placing children under the age of 12 years in a position fitted with an airbag – these warning should be adhered to.

As children grow and develop, they vary considerably in height and weight. For many 4 year olds, a forward facing child safety seat will still be the right size restraint for them. A booster seat should only be used once the child has outgrown their child safety seat by reaching the maximum weight or height for the seat.

A booster is a restraint designed to elevate a child so that they can wear a seatbelt correctly while providing side protection from both the vehicle and other passengers.

With the introduction of booster seats with shoulder height markers for children aged approx. 4 years to 6-8 years, children can now continue to travel in a restraint that is suitable for their size for longer as they are no longer restricted by weight.

Children travelling in a booster seat should continue using the booster seat until they have outgrown it. If a child outgrows their booster seat and cannot fit the adult seatbelt correctly then use a larger booster seat.

When choosing a booster seat ensure that the booster guides the sash part of the seatbelt onto the shoulder and not across the face or neck, and the lap part of the seatbelt sits low across the hips.

If you need to use a position that features a lap only seatbelt, then a harness must be used.  If this is the case then only a booster with an anti-submarining buckle should be used. This will ensure the lap part of the seatbelt is held down low on the child’s hips. Check to ensure the booster seat that you are using is compatible with a harness.

If you must use a child safety harness, ensure that the shoulder straps are not over tightened and that the lap part of the seatbelt is very low and firm across the hips, otherwise it may ride up into the child’s stomach area. This may cause serious injury or death to a child in a crash.

The harness must be checked for correct fit every time it is used.

Recommended Booster Seats

Safe-n-Sound Hi-Liner SG

From 4 years to approx. 8 years.

RRP: $219.00     Member’s Price: $199.00

Safe-n-Sound Hi-liner SG

The Hi-Liner is an exceptionally tall, moulded plastic booster with an adjustable head rest and is attached to the vehicle by an upper tether strap. The Hi-Liner does an excellent job of guiding the seatbelt correctly onto the child. The high side-wings adjust up as the child grows to ensure maximum side impact protection.

This booster is one of the tallest booster seats on the market and will see a child through to the height required to wear an adult seatbelt correctly in most vehicles.

Note: If your child has outgrown a booster such as this one and cannot wear an adult seatbelt correctly, advice should be sought from the RAA to see if there is a larger one available.

This booster features a “slide guard clip”, designed to prevent a child from sliding off the seat and to guide the lap part of the belt onto the hips. This booster is compatible with a Protecta Plus Harness when only a lap belt is available.

Infa Secure Vario Treo Booster Seat

From 4 years to approx. 8 years.

RRP: $170.00 Member’s price: $149.00

Vario-Treo-Front-Aqua

The Vario Treo Booster Seat is a tall, narrow booster with an adjustable headrest that grows with the child. The headrest has integrated seatbelt guides so, when adjusted just above the child’s shoulders, provides excellent seatbelt fit. The seat is attached to the vehicle with an upper tether strap.

The Vario Caprice’s blow moulded design results in enhanced side impact protection. The headrest side wings act like airbags, greatly reducing the force on your child’s head in a side impact crash.

Available in three different colours.

Note: If your child has outgrown a booster such as this one and cannot wear an adult seatbelt correctly, advice should be sought from the RAA to see if there is a larger one available.

Infa Secure Versatile Folding Booster

From 4 years to approx. 8 years.

RRP: $80.00    Member’s price: $70.00

Infra Secure Versatile Folding Booster resized

True to name this booster is very versatile, particularly when travelling, as it is light and can be folded for easy storage. It is not as tall as other boosters so won’t take as tall a child as the Vario in the same range. As the booster is untethered, it can be used in vehicles where there is no anchor point fitted. This may be in the third row of an SUV vehicle, in a van/ute or even when travelling overseas in vehicles that are not fitted with anchor points.

RAA recommends this seat when there is a position without an anchor, for travelling, or when you need a spare booster for that unexpected passenger.

Note: If your child has outgrown a booster such as this one and cannot wear an adult seatbelt correctly, advice should be sought from RAA to see if there is a larger one available.

This booster features a “slide guard clip”, designed to prevent a child from sliding off the seat and to guide the lap part of the belt onto the hips. This booster is compatible with a protecta harness when only a lap belt is available.

RAA recommends this booster for positions without anchor points and where the booster needs to be moved from car to car.

Note: If your child has outgrown a booster such as this one and cannot wear an adult seatbelt correctly, advice should be sought from RAA to see if there is a larger one available.
