International Driving Permits

An International Driving Permit (IDP) is a special tourist licence, authorised by a United Nations treaty, allowing a motorist to drive overseas without further tests or applications.
It’s proof that you hold a valid driver’s licence in Australia, and is a requirement for driving and/or renting a motor vehicle in many countries.
Your IDP shows your identification details in nine languages (English, French, Spanish, Russian, Chinese, Arabic, Greek, German and Japanese), making it a handy form of ID when communicating with foreign authorities.
While it verifies that you hold a current licence to drive in Australia, it’s important to familiarise yourself with the road rules of the countries in which you intend driving.
The RAA is the only organisation authorised to issue an IDP in South Australia.
To obtain an IDP, take a copy of your current Australian driver’s licence into any RAA Shop along with a passport size photo, or order online.
An IDP:
- is only valid for 12 months
- is a translation of your Australian driver's licence and,
- must be accompanied by your valid Australian driver’s licence at all times
Cost - $39.00
