Current campaigns

RAA is currently holding the state government to account on introducing real-time fuel pricing. This change would see significant cost savings for SA motorists.

Real-time fuel pricing

Imagine the money you could save if real-time fuel prices were available online or on your mobile phone for every service station in the state.

In Queensland, New South Wales and the Northern Territory, this is possible thanks to the implementation of mandatory real-time fuel price reporting.

This means service stations must regularly provide the state government with current, real-time fuel prices, which are then published on websites and apps.

The SA Government has committed to delivering a similar scheme, but this hasn't happened yet. Here’s why it'll benefit SA motorists if it’s introduced.

Accurate, up-to-date prices online

Currently, SA motorists can access petrol price information through a range of fuel-comparison apps that rely on a mix of data from users, retailers and private companies. However, this information isn't always accurate or up-to-date.

Mandatory real-time fuel price reporting means prices published online are updated regularly, helping consumers save money at the pump by choosing when and where to buy.

According to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), giving motorists more access to petrol price data will empower them to make better purchasing decisions.

Option to shop around

By using the FuelCheck app, motorists in NSW can see where the cheapest and most expensive fuel in their area is being sold. If a similar system is introduced in SA, drivers will be able to use online information to shop around and find the best deal on any given day.

This is particularly handy when fuel prices spike by 30 to 40 cents a litre within a couple of hours. RAA predicts mandatory real-time fuel price reporting will save a sedan owner about $400 a year – that’s almost a quarter of their annual fuel bill.

More competition

Mandatory real-time fuel price reporting will help give motorists the power to find cheaper fuel, and reward retailers who offer the best deal.
