Early road safety education that makes a difference

Road safety is a life skill that we believe should start early. That’s why we offer Street Smart Primary — free, road safety education lessons for South Australian schools. These lessons help children learn how to stay safe as pedestrians, passengers, cyclists and scooter riders.

Since launching in 2014, Street Smart Primary has reached thousands of children. The program has helped students build the knowledge, skills and behaviours to stay safe around roads.

What happens in a Street Smart Primary lesson?

Our incursions for schools help primary students build on their road safety knowledge in a fun, age-appropriate way. Topics include pedestrian, passenger, and wheeled safety.

A trained road safety educator will deliver a 45-minute lesson that includes:

Interactive lessons tailored for Reception to Year 6
Curriculum-linked activities designed to engage and inform
Activity booklets to continue the learning in class and at home

Narrator: RAA’s Street Smart Primary is a free road safety program available to all South Australian primary schools.

Our Road Safety Educators are qualified teachers who are passionate about road safety.

We cater for students from Reception to Year 6, teaching them about pedestrian, passenger, and wheeled safety.

Younger students learn how to cross the road safely using the ‘Stop, Look, Listen, Think’ strategy, as well as the importance of holding an adult's hand and safe passenger behaviour.

Our Road Safety Educators teach students about strategies they can use to stay safe when they begin to use the road system more independently.

Older students learn about responsible road use, minimising risk, the importance of safety equipment and maintaining their wheels.

There is nothing more important than keeping children safe. That's why RAA’s helping students become Street Smart.

A whole school approach is best, and each class will receive an interactive and engaging 45 minute lesson.

Frequently asked questions

How many lessons can a school book?
We deliver up to five lessons per day, with up to 30 students per group.

If you need more than five lessons, we can arrange additional visits to suit your school’s needs.
Where will the lessons be held?
A spare classroom on the ground floor is preferred. If it’s upstairs, please make sure there’s a lift or ramp available — our educators will need to carry equipment to the room.

All sessions should be held in the same classroom to keep things running smoothly.
Does the classroom teacher or the school need to prepare anything?
There’s no lesson prep needed — we bring everything with us.

We just ask for a few things to help the lesson run smoothly:
- A room that fits up to 30 students, with enough floor space for a 2.5 x 3.5m road mat.
- Access to tech for a PowerPoint presentation (with sound and video), via USB.
- A spare classroom on the ground floor is preferred. If it’s upstairs, please make sure there’s a lift or ramp available — our educators will need to carry equipment to the room. All sessions should be held in the same classroom to keep things running smoothly.
Do you cater for students with additional needs?
Yes, we offer a 30-minute lesson to cater for students with additional needs. Our Road Safety Educator will work with your key school contact to provide a lesson that's suited to your students' needs.
