Frequently asked questions
Choosing a charger
-
Which EV charger is right for me?
The right home EV charger depends on:
- Your car's charging capabilities
- How quickly you need to charge
- Your budget and usage patterns
Our team will assess your needs during the free consultation and recommend the best option for your situation.
-
Are RAA’s home EV chargers compatible with most makes and models? What if I upgrade to a new EV in a few years’ time?
Yes. Our home EV chargers work with Type 2 cables, which have been standard for electric vehicles since 2020 and are expected to be used well into the future. This means your charger is likely to work if you upgrade to a new EV.
Our consultants will help you pick the right charger for your car.

-
Where should I install my home EV charger?
Our home EV specialists will help you find the perfect spot for your charger. Most people install them in garages or under carports for weather protection.
We'll consider:
- How you prefer to park your EV
- Where your car's charging port is located
- Space needed to access your car while charging
-
Do I need approval to get a home EV charger installed?
Yes. To draw more than 20 amps, you’ll need to get approval from South Australia Power Networks (SAPN). We’ll take care of this for you before installing the EV charger at your home.
-
Can I install a home EV charger at a shared property or apartment?
Currently, we can’t install home EV chargers at shared properties or apartments. Check our home EV charger page for updates as this may change.
Using your charger
-
How quickly can I charge my EV at home?
A home EV charger is much faster than a regular power point. Charging times depend on your EV’s battery size and charger type.
Regular power point (2.4kW)
- Adds about 10km of range per hour
- Full charge can take 24-48 hours depending on your battery size
Home EV charger (7-22kW)
- Adds 30-80km of range per hour
- Most EVs can fully charge overnight (6-10 hours)
-
When's the best time to charge my EV?
Night-time charging is usually cheapest. Most power companies offer off-peak rates between midnight and 6am when electricity demand is lowest.
Got solar panels? You can program your home EV charger to use excess solar during the day, or take advantage of South Australia's Solar Sponge Tariff for renewable energy from the grid.
-
Can I use solar to power my home EV charger?
If you have solar panels, your home EV charger may be able to use some of that solar power. When solar isn’t available, it will draw from the grid. With solar panels, you could charge your EV during the day using your solar power for little to no cost.
Having solar and an EV charger can help you:
- Charge your EV with clean, renewable energy
- Use excess solar power instead of selling it back to the grid
- Take advantage of South Australia's Solar Sponge Tariff
Our team will assess your solar setup and recommend the best charging schedule to maximise your solar savings.
Don’t have solar yet? Our team can help you with our solar packages too.
-
