A few changes could help to make your car insurance cheaper

Whether you're looking for Comprehensive or Third-Party car insurance, it can be hard to compare insurance directly. This page may help you to better understand how car insurance premiums work. We've also included some ideas that may lead to a lower car insurance premium.

  • What's an insurance premium?

A premium is the amount of money you pay for an insurance policy. We calculate your premium using information you tell us. What you tell us impacts how the risk is assessed, and the discounts we apply. This calculation determines your 'premium payable'. You can get a quote online or call 8202 4567 to find out how much your insurance premium could be.

Things that may lower your insurance premium

Tell us when you've paid off your car loan

It usually costs more to insure a car when you have a car loan. If you told us that you had a car loan when you first bought or last renewed your car insurance, but you've since paid off your car, you should tell us. Call us on 8202 4567 so that we can remove it from your policy.

Park in a secure location

You may be paying more for your car insurance if you usually park your car on a public street. You may be able to save money by parking your car in a driveway. And you may save even more money if you park in a garage or carport. This is because it lowers the chance that your car will be impacted by an insured event like a car accident, theft or a hailstorm.

You can tell us where the car is normally parked overnight when you get a quote. To update an existing policy, please call 8202 4567.

Remove young drivers from your policy

If a young driver is listed as a driver on your policy, you may be paying a higher premium. If they don't drive your car at all, call 8202 4567 and we'll help you remove them. Check the PDS for more details.

Let us know if you have a Seniors Card

Seniors Card holders can get a discount of up to 10% on their car insurance policy and up to 15% on Home and Contents Insurance policies.* Tell us that you have a Seniors Card when you get a quote. If you already have a policy with RAA, call us on 8202 4567 and we'll update your details. Any applicable discount would be applied from your next renewal.

Review your basic excess

Choosing a higher excess can make your insurance cheaper. You may have to pay more to make a claim against your policy though. You can choose the size of your basic excess when you get a quote. To change the excess on an existing policy, call 8202 4567.

You can read more about excesses in our Product Disclosure Statements.

Choose your extras

When you get a quote for Comprehensive Car Insurance, you have the option to add Hire Car Cover. Your insurance premium will be lower if you don't add this cover, but we won't help pay for hire car costs while your car is being repaired after a covered incident.

If you have RAA Standard Comprehensive Car Insurance, you can also choose to add one $0 excess repair or replacement on your windscreen or window glass per policy term. You may have to pay the basic excess for any more claims. RAA Premium Comprehensive Car Insurance includes unlimited $0 excess windscreen repairs or replacements.

Calculate how far you expect to drive

If your commute is 2km, you'd likely have less chance of being involved in an accident than someone who is driving 50km every day. When you get a quote, you'll be asked how far you expect to drive each year. Make sure that you select the option which is closest to your expected use. If, during your policy period, the amount of driving you do changes, let us know as it may impact the premium you pay.

Other ways to save

    Use RAA Rewards

Not all rewards programs are made equal. Through RAA Rewards, your savings could add up all across SA.

*Discounts do not apply to optional covers or statutory charges. A minimum premium applies. Discounts to your existing insurance policies will be applied at the next renewal of each policy.

  • Important: Check your policy inclusions

It's important to check what's included in your car insurance policy. Our customers can find this in the Product Disclosure Statement. For example:

On comprehensive policies, some insurers only offer to replace your old car with a new car if it's written off within 2-3 years from first registration. Our Premium Comprehensive Car Insurance offers new vehicle replacement if your new car is written off within 5 years of first registration. We also offer Standard Comprehensive Car Insurance which provides the same benefit if your vehicle is written off within 2 years of first registration.

We'll replace your car with the same model or a comparable one if unavailable. If we can’t replace it within 90 days, we’ll offer a cash settlement.
